Breakout/Workshop Sessions
Evolving with Gratitude: Three Ways to Use Gratitude to Promote Well-Being & Improve Learning
Thankfully, our education community is focusing on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and serving the whole child. The challenge is, how do we start with, build from, and embed SEL into our practice? Where do we begin? Research proves that by intentionally practicing gratitude and wiring our brains in this way, we dramatically improve our mindset, bringing us more joy and better health. It also makes a huge difference in relationships and leads to more successful learning experiences. In this session, we will explore small gratitude practices that make a big impact with kids, peers, and the world.
Together, we will:
- Discover how we can empower kids to be grateful for learning which leads to engagement. We will also discover how to cultivate a culture of authentic gratitude in our learning communities.
- Discuss ways we can practice gratitude with our peers to help us cope with stress, regulate our emotions, and nurture relationships.
- Explore how gratitude promotes prosocial behavior in our world.
This session is applicable to all grade levels, subject areas, and ability levels. Regardless of age and stage, we can practice gratitude to establish psychological safety and nurture a sense of belonging while also promoting all five of CASEL’s SEL competencies:
- relationship skills
- social awareness
- self-awareness
- self-management
- responsible decision-making
Are you already familiar with gratitude practices? Just considering implementing gratitude? Either way, this interactive session will be a rich source of ideas, resources, and information about using gratitude to create safe, equitable, empowering learning experiences for all students. All leading to increased resilience and improved well-being for all. We can use gratitude to shift from barely surviving to actually thriving and getting back to the joy of teaching, learning, and leading.

Evolving with Inquiry - Discover, Discuss, Demonstrate
How can we engage students in deeper learning and embrace the variability in individuals? We know that in a connected world, learners can collaborate, interact with experts, perform research, and produce creative works, but how do we implement this effectively? The answer is universally designed learning experiences in a community of inquiry.
Together, we will:
- Discover practical, research-based strategies for inquiry-based learning
- Discuss ways to universally design instruction, provide choice, and increase student agency
- Demonstrate an understanding of design considerations for creating personalized experiences that focus on firm goals, flexible means

Three Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Practices We Can Do Every Day
How do you feel about the phrase soft skills? For me (and for many), skills such as critical thinking, empathy, creativity, and teamwork are not soft skills. These are essential skills or center skills. Decision-making, self-awareness, and self-regulation are at the center of learning and life. We need to start with, build from, and embed social and emotional learning (SEL) into safe, equitable, empowering learning experiences for all students.
Together, we will:
- Discover the three SEL signature practices from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL)
- Explore examples that are simple, portable, and customizable (can be used fully online, hybrid, or in person)
- Thoughtfully select, adapt, and prepare strategies, activities, and protocols to meet the specific goals and needs of your community

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Communities Where Everyone Flourishes
We can evolve beyond one-size-fits-all to design learning experiences where each learner can flourish academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally. Let’s bring research and theory to life to unlock the power and promise of UDL. If you are ready to cultivate authentic learning communities and design inclusive, accessible, and engaging lessons, this session is for you!
Together, we will:
- Discover innovative ways to establish firm goals and flexible means
- Discuss how we remove barriers to design equitable learning opportunities (without extra work on nights and weekends)
- Demonstrate an understanding of design considerations for creating personalized experiences for all
